I had a somewhat similar experience in Germany.

I don't speak German, but had picked up a little.  I knew that Strasse
meant street and I noticed lots of Ein Bahn Strasses.  Seemed like
each town had one.  About the time that we noticed that there seemed
to be more than one of these streets in many towns it finally dawned
on us that Ein Bahn Strasse as One Way Street.
