The only 'named' freeways I ever heard in the Bay Area were the
Bayshore (101 between SF and San Jose (?)) and the Nimitz, which collapsed
in the quake.

No. There's also the MacArthur (which is part of but not all of the 580)
and the Warren (which I think is the 13).

I think they all have names. We just refuse to use most of them.

.. and, as previously mentioned, the Embarcadero (good riddance!).

Also, in Marin we called the stretch of highway 1 from Tam Valley up
to about Tomales the Shoreline.

(My apologies if this post is redundant -- we just picked up ba.general
on Nyx and I've missed a lot of the discusssion.)

FYI, the southernmost sign denoting the Shore Line Highway is on the
very south edge of San Francisco, northbound, between Alemany and
Brotherhood Way on Rte 1.

How do highways get these names? The only ones specified by statute are
El Camino Real, PCH and Cabrillo Highway. At least that I can find.

So where do names like "Redwood Highway" and "Shoreline Highway" get
their authorization?
