Can anyone help with the following query? | What is a minor syllable? In braille writing, one is | allowed to use "short-cuts", or contractions, if the contraction | does not overlap a syllable break, UNLESS the syllable | is a minor syllable. | | For example, there is a contraction for the part-word | "and". | | The contraction and CAN be used in the word handle, | since (apparently) the syllable break han-dle is a minor | syllable break. | | Comments? -- misrael@scripps.edu Mark Israel

It seems likely to me that a minor syllable is one that would be
indicated in ASCII IPA with a consonant followed by a hyphen.

Ysgrifennodd Mark Israel (misrael@scripps.edu): Can anyone help with the following query? | What is a minor syllable? In braille writing, one is | allowed to use "short-cuts", or contractions, if the contraction | does not overlap a syllable break, UNLESS the syllable | is a minor syllable. | | For example, there is a contraction for the part-word | "and". | | The contraction and CAN be used in the word handle, | since (apparently) the syllable break han-dle is a minor | syllable break. | | Comments? 1 I assume han-dle must be one of those strange American syllable breaks: i would split it hand-le anyway, and the problem goes away. 2 I am still looking for my Braille manual - i will reply soon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Simon.Buck @ Computing-Service.Cambridge.AC.UK Gwasanaeth Cyfrifiadurol Prifysgol Caergrawnt, CB2 3QG, Y Deyrnas Unedig
