I would be interested in finding out recent estimates, as reliable as possible (of course), of numbers of speakers of languages native to the Americas. I would like to get both recent estimates of numbers of native/first-language speakers who are still fluent, and also numbers of native people whose first language was English, Spanish, or French but who later became fluent in their aboriginal language. Reliable recent information about any language or languages is solicited, ad hoc estimates will be useful if more official information is not available. If there are published sources to support any claims, I'd like to know those, and of course pointers to any compendia, source books, handbooks, etc., that would have reliable recent estimates would be great. I am interested in estimates for both North America and Latin America. Thanks in advance. I'll post a summary table if I get enough information to justify such. Failing that you might want to contact either Statistics Canada or the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs (both are federal government departments in Ottawa, Ontario). Let me know what you find out... sounds interesting! What about other areas of cultural retention/survival? Al Patenaude email: alp0@inukshuk.gov.nt.ca Yellowknife, N.W.T., Canada
