I thought the follwoing joke was well known:

  What's the difference between a mathematician and a philosopher?
  Well, to work a mathematician needs a chair, a desk, a paper and
  some writing implements and a waste paper basket; in the case of
  a philosopher you can throw away the waste paper basket.
