Lecture Series ``Collegium Logicum'' Kurt Goedel Society University of Technology, Vienna, Austria Oesterreichische Mathematische Gesellschaft Oesterreichische Gesellschaft fuer Wissenschaftsgeschichte Lecture Announcement -------------------- IVOR GRATTAN-GUINNESS ===================== Middlesex University, England [ivor2@vaxc.middlesex.ac.uk] Two Traditions in the 19th Century: Algebraic Logic versus Mathematical Logic ----------------------------------------- Thursday, June 9, 1994, 17:00 George Boole made a new kind of applied mathematics when he launched his Boolean algebra in the mid-19th century. Similarly, Augustus de Morgan applied algebra to syllogistic logic, especially with his logic of relations. The successors of this tradition, especially C. S. Pierce and Ernst Schroeder, continued the same style. By very great contrast, in the 1880s Guiseppe Peano formalised the language of mathematical analysis in elements of ``mathematical logic'' (his name in the context). He and his colleagues axiomatised several areas of mathematics with the help of this logic, and around 1900 Bertrand Russell decided that ALL mathematics could be handled this way. Now roles were reversed: mathematics was applied logic. The contrast between these two traditions is extremely strong--a great irony, since each approach was general and sought certainty in knowledge, and yet neither could embrace the other. IVOR GRATTAN-GUINNESS is Professor of the History of Mathematics and Logic at Middlesex University, England. His latest book is ``Convolutions in French Mathematics, 1800-1840,'' 3 volumes (1990, Basel and Berlin). He is writing a general history of mathematics for the Fontana History of Science series, and is also working on the history of mathematical logic and the foundations of mathematics from 1870 to 1930. ------------------------ Kurt-Goedel-Gesellschaft Technische Universitaet Wien Institut fuer Computersprachen E185.2 Resselgasse 3/1, A-1040 Wien Tel: (+43 1) 588 01/4088 Fax: (+43 1) 504 15 89 email: kgs@logic.tuwien.ac.at Mit Unterstuetzung des Bundesministeriums fuer Wissenschaft und Forschung
