To what extent are science and scientists to blame for the ills of the
world? Why didn't The Enlightenment automatically result in human progress?
The answer, presumably, is that science is only part of society, and more
powerful forces tend to prevail, distorting science and its resultant
technology for their own nefarious ends. Not that if scientists, as such,
"took over" that things would be so much better ("human nature" being what
it is). However, a "reverence for Nature" might be a good starting
point...? Or, at least, a realisation the "we are all part of Nature".
Fortunately, this idea is starting to filter through to everyone; hopefully,
not too late. Also, the Scientific Method is capable of application to all
sorts of problems, not only "scientific ones". "Humans are social animals",
and ethics can be based on this empirical observation. Science is
democratic, and flourishes in a freethought environment; hence this
characteristic should be preserved - and encouraged in society at large.
