PDE solution algorithms?

Hello everyone:

I am looking for a public domain package to solve sytems of Partial
Differential Equations. Somewhere I read about a package called FORSIM,
which uses Runge-Kutta with variable step size. I have used this technique
to solve Ordinary Differential Equations, but I can't quite grasp how it can be
used for PDE's.
I have been using the finite differencing techniques described in PDE books,
but my solutions are very unstable and sensitive to grid size. I'm sure there
are some algorithms out there that improve on this, but since i'm new to PDE's,
I'm completely confused. Any help will be appreciated.
