Hi People,

Does anyone know whether the authors of numerical recipes
(Press, Flannery, Teukolsky and Vetterling) allow their
routines to be used in public domain software? I own a
copy of their book and have used two routines that are
quite beyond what I could program (at least in this life
time!) and I would like to share the software that I have
used these routine in. Up to now I have stripped the two
routines and noted that you need to supply such and such,
but I thought I'd ask...

Perhaps one of the authors is on the net?

Cheers,
Chris

On my edition, I read:

"To purchase diskettes in IBM PC or Apple Macintosh formats, use the
order form [...] Unlicensed transfer of Numerical Recipes programs
from the abovementioned IBM PC or Apple Macintosh diskettes to
any other format, or to any other computer except a single IBM PC
or Apple Macintosh or compatible for each diskette purchased, is
 strictly prohibited."

So, just compiling one of their routines on a IBM RS/6000 or HP or Cray ...
automatically implies that a crime has been perpetrated.

But ...wait! Look carefully! The note is concerned about a copy *from
the diskette* to another machine.
But since the source is published, you can type it by hand into a file,
and then that file can be transferred here and there without restrictions :-)

But this still leaves your question open ...

But, can I distribute the executable without the source? I was at Cornell,
and worked on a project in the physics dept writing PD software. Teukolsky
is at Cornell, and supposedly (according to my boss) he said that it's OK to
distribute it after it's been compiled, but not the source.
