[This is an informational posting about a course starting Monday (next week)
at the Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins University.]

Current Topics in Information Technology: Summer '92
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Homewood Academic Computing of the Johns Hopkins University, in cooperation
with the JHU Whiting School of Engineering, offers each semester a series of
non-credit courses focusing on current topics in computing. The subject of
the final course in our series this summer is the multi-functional statistical
programming environment known as S. Continuing Education Units may be awarded
upon completion.

This course is hands-on, and space is very limited. A registration form for
the course is attached. For assistance, please contact Rodney Baker in
Homewood Academic Computing at 516-8096 (FAX 516-5508). For information about
other HAC courses, please call Lee Watkins, HAC Assistant Director.

The S Statistical Programming Environment
Paul M. Wright
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Indigo Workstation Lab, Krieger Hall 172-A

This course presents data analysis and graphics using the new S language from
Bell Labs, a powerful interactive programming environment for UNIX systems.
Students will learn how S handles data, how to use the large collection of S
functions to perform statistical analyses, and how to display information with
the flexible graphics capabilities of S. Students will also learn how to expand
S by writing S functions, as well as how to use the interface to UNIX system
commands (one of the most useful aspects of any good UNIX tool). A working
knowledge of statistical procedures and linear algebra operations is required
for this course.
