I am doing a survey on employment trend of recent graduates. I need to know how does the employment rate carry out. To be more specific I need to know if someone leave the country, does one count as unemploy ? If someone is not doing his/her field related job, does he/she count as employ or unemploy. Is there any article about the above topic ? I do not seem to to able to find any related meterial in the Library. Thanks.

In the United States the official government unemployment numbers are derived from a monthly multi-stage national sample survey called the Current Population Survey (CPS). The CPS asks questions like "how many hours did you work last week" and "did you look for a job last week." (I probably do not have the wording correct here.) A person is counted as unemployed if (a) they do not have a job, and (b) they are looking for work. If they are neither working nor looking for a job then they are counted as "out of the labor force" and do not appear in either the numerator or denominator of the unemployment rate calculation. A person who is out of the country is not surveyed, hence, not counted as employed or unemployed. I do not believe that nationality is a factor in calculating the rate. For further information contact the U.S. Bureau of the Census in Washington, D.C. (They are not on the internet, so don't ask for an e-mail address.) -- T.
