"The Foundations of Statistics" by Leonard "Jimmie" Savage
(possibly still in Dover paperback edition?)

In article <1993Jan8.195334.489@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu> regeorge@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu (Robert E George) writes:

One of the best articles on the subject is also (posthumously) by
Savage: "On rereading R. A. Fisher" with commentary, 1976 Annals of
Statistics, pp 441- 483.

The "foundations" of statistics is a broad topic (no pun intended) and can
mean different things to different people. If you'd like a quick overview/
comparison of different schools of statistical inference, you might try
Barnett's Comparative Statistical Inference (Wiley). If your interest is
more in the area of probability, try Kyburg and Smokler (eds) Studies in
Subjective Probability (Wiley, sold to Krieger).
