Does anyone know if maple (or any other package) on supercomputers can do traces involving Gamma (Dirac) matrices,contractions of lorentz indices and recognise inner products of lorentz 4-vectors.

There is a Maple package called HIP by Eran Yehudai who is now at Fermi Lab which I think does what you want. It is a package for symbolic calculation of Feynman diagrams and relativistic kinematics. You can get the package from ftp.uu.net in the directory pub/physics/maple. There is also another version of HIP for Mma at mathsource.wri.com. Good luck. Brian Harris

You might want to give 'FORM' a try. It's especially designed to do calculations in High Energy Physics with loads of gamma's. A freeware version is available by ftp from 'canb.can.nl' (might be 'cana.can.nl'). Kasper

REDUCE of course has been in the business of doing traces of Gamma
matrices and that kind of thing for many years. I believe that it is
available for at least the CRAY, and Fujitsu (aka Siemens)
supercomputers, as well as a number of other high performance machines
(and indeed low performance machines down to MAC and 80286 PCs)
You can get more information on REDUCE by mailing
reduce-netlib@rand.org or reduce-netlib@can.nl or
redlib@elib.zib-berlin.de with the single line
send info-package

PSI just noticed that lThere is also a library routine in the latest
release entitled
{CVIT - Program for fast calculation of Dirac's $\gamma$-matrices traces}
which comes from Moscow State University

REDUCE is widely used for Dirac Gamma matrix manipulations and runs on most commonly available machines from PC's to Supers like CRAY and Fujitsu (an information package can be obtained by sending the message 'send info-package' to reduce-netlib@rand.org). It currently has two packages (HEPHYS and CVIT) for high energy physics calculations. There is also a large bibliography of over 700 papers referencing REDUCE, many in the high energy physics area.
