For the past several years, the Dartmouth Medical School, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, and Dartmouth's Biomedical Libraries have collaborated to offer the C. Everett Koop Lectures on Medical Informatics. We are seeking our 1997 speaker; see the following for details. I would appreciate your assistance -- telephone me, or send email. The Lectures honor Dr. Koop -- Dartmouth's Elizabeth DeCamp McInerny Professor of Surgery, and Senior Scholar of The C. Everett Koop Institute here -- and his assumption of a national and regional planning role in health information systems. The principal purpose of the series is two-fold: to heighten regional awareness of the importance of information systems in the delivery of health care, and to bring to Dartmouth's academic medical center a variety of perspectives from individuals working in information systems development in other institutions. 1996/97 is the Bicentennial of the founding of the Dartmouth Medical School, and ideally 1997's Koop Lecture would build a link to this celebration. Consequently, we are looking for a speaker who can discuss how biomedical information has grown up with and changed medical education and the practice of medicine, and how medical informatics may change medical education and practice in the future. A historian of medicine with a definite future-looking, technological bent would be appropriate, as would a technologist able to place the future of medical informatics in the context of the past. Of course, it's a definite plus if the speaker is wittily engaging at the podium. This year's address can take place in April/May or September/October 1979. In addition to expenses, we would offer a modest honorarium. The inaugural Koop Lecturer was William Stead, M.D., speaking in February 1995 on advances in informatics. The second Lecturer was Ted Shortcliffe, M.D., speaking in May 1996 on the national information infrastructure and health care. Again, thanks for your consideration.
