I don't think it serves Individual horror stories are always fun to read, but do little to tell you about the total quality of medical care received. I usually don't comment on such stories, but I do wonder if screwups don't really serve to reinforce how much we do need the legal system to stay involved in medicine. What in fact will happen to the man who lost the wrong foot? We have no system of human disability insurance; just social security, which might give a no-name victim $900 a month. For that, you would have to live in public housing, below the poverty line. Unless someone gets their name in the paper, that is what they face in this country, plus the bill for the error. By getting his name in the paper, he at least does not have to worry about his financial future. Is that all bad? The no-name victim would not be so lucky.
