A previous study, funded by the Foundation of Nursing Studies, has looked at usage and perceived potential of computer networks. This large study surveyed all UK health trusts (n=355, responses 257, 72% response rate) and all academic nursing departments (n=158, 91 responses, response rate 58%) offering nursing courses. The results (available on http://www.nursing-standard.ac.uk/vol11-18/research.htm N.B. there are contradictions created in editing, between the text and Fig 1, the text is correct) have shown significant differences between academic and clinical sites, between different specialisms, and between geographical areas, and has provided a much needed baseline from which to develop and compare future studies. There a modified version of the UK survey tool on http://medweb.bham.ac.uk/nursing/survey for an international comparative study. By the use of an electronic form subjects from any country can enter data. Any subject who fills in an online questionnaire may receive via email the survey results upon completion. You may, if you prefer, print the form, and mail or fax it to the address below. I do not expect a representative sample, or a large sample, via this electronic questionnaire, however I will still find the data useful as a comparison with other sources. What I REALLY need help on is getting contacts with other European countries, especially the eastern countries, in most in particular the former USSR, where I have no contacts at all. If any of you reading this are from one of these countries, or know of contacts there, I shall be very pleased to hear from you. My partner is doing a pan European study of social exclusion involving five themes, health, social protection, education, employment and housing. We (I am assisting her on the health paper) would be most interested to hear from you if you have anything to say on these areas, with specific reference to Eastern Europe (though we are looking at all countries covered by the Council of Europe, so don't be shy if you are from anywhere in Europe). Finally the Work Injured Nursing Group of the Royal College of Nursing, here in the UK, believe they are the only such group for nurses in the world. They would dearly like to be told they are wrong. If they are correct they would be most interested in helping others set up such a group. Unsurprisingly we are particularly interested in our European neighbours, and strangely enough Eastern Europe (because we are so ignorant about the East) is a special area for us. You can contact either me or rcc@globalnet.co.uk (Roger Cowell). I do apologise for going on so long, but as you may have noted from reports of my death, I have been rather inactive on the lists (Denis Anthony, who he? I hear you say). You might say I have been saving it all up!
