******************************************************************** Buying a new computer screen (more specifically, an X-Terminal), how can I find out which one is the most friendly to my health ? ******************************************************************** Is there any list of test results w.r.t. radiation, eyestrain, etc, preferably sorted by manufacturer/product name ? I'd also like to evaluate the X-Terminals we've got here already, i.e. Tektronix XP-12 (Model#119-4409-01) and Silicon Graphics GDM-1934SG. ******************************************************************** Which data would you like to measure yourself, because it has high variability within a product line ? (but I dont wanna start yet another EMS discussion ;-) ******************************************************************** THANKS A LOT FOR ANY HELP THAT I CAN GET !!!!!!!!!!!! georg fuellen@Mathematik.Uni-Bielefeld.DE botip

Some time ago the Health Protection Branch of Health and Welfare Canada conducted a study of radiation emmissions from various monitors in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They shielded their test environment with steel plates taken from pre-WWII battle ship hulls (all steel made after 1945 includes recycled metal, and possesses higher indigenous background radiation concentrations) to prevent stray and background radiation from affecting their tests. As I recall from the report, when conduction high energy radiation tests, they were not able to detect any radiation from any of the monitors. When the operator entered the room, however, the detection equipment went off- scale due to the natural background emmissions from human tissue. They concluded, probably tounge in cheek, that the trendy radiation shields being peddled in that time really protected the monitor from the operator's background radiation!! This test was conducted before concerns about low energy E/M radation from power supplies and fly-back transformers became an issue. They may well have conducted further tests since I was in that loop. For more information, you can contact the Health Protection Branch of Health Canada (previously Health and Welfare Canada) at (613) 957-2991. Alex
