reading and hand pain

I have bilateral CTS and ulnar nerve compression at both wrists (I'm a
computer programmer). I also read a lot, and I've noticed that reading
(holding the book) hurts my hands and arms a good deal, too. To try to
lessen the strain on my hands, I've tried sitting at a table with the book
on the table (but this isn't good for the back). I've also tried sitting
with pillows in my lap to prop up the book. What do other people do?
Are there any nifty gadgets out there that help with this kind of thing?

There's a mail-order outfit called "Levenger" which sells several
items you might like. They have a roll-around table which tilts and
has a ledge on the bottom (like the meal tables at a hospital,
except most of the table part tilts). They also have an inclined
desk-top table, and a lap desk. I've never ordered from them, but
the stuff looks good quality. I'm at work and don't have the
address, but they advertise in upscale magazines (like the New Yorker,
Smithsonion, Scientific American, etc). I'll try to post
the info after the holidays.

I've ordered from Levenger. Their stuff seems OK, but the table you speak
of is tricky to assemble and not as stable as I would really like.

A company called BackSaver sells a "Rolling Desk Mate" that *appears* to be
a sturdier, larger, version of the same thing. A little more $, too.

BackSaver has an interesting catalog. Their # is 1-800-251-2225. Call 800
information (555-1212) to get Levenger's #.

I have not actually ordered anything from BackSaver. Would be interested
in hearing from anyone who has.
