Newsgroups are actually a very good place to start as there are SOME very knowledgable people there, but beware of the crackpots. Generally, if you get little or no response, then it means that your ideas aren't all that outrageous, although that is still very far from what would be considered to be mainstream acceptance. If you get your butt flamed off, then you'll know that you've got a lot of work to do yet, but don't get too discouraged by that, since it is the argument which serves as the stone which hones your point. As I've said, newsgroups are a good starting place, especially if you don't have the technical writing ability and rigor that serious scientific journals will require. Be careful that you look and listen for good advice from people that do know what they are talking about though. Make sure that you ask a lot of questions, and don't be too... matter-of-fact... about it all, or you might just find yourself branded and banished to the crackpot list. I'm assuming that your idea represents a physics theory, so try posting a paper to sci.physics.research first. S.P.R. is a moderated group and the physicists that do the moderating don't accept anything that is considered to be overly speculative. If your paper is accepted and posted there, then you will have successfully made it past one giant hurdle and you will be rubbing elbows with the right people, but the moderators won't tell you what's wrong with your paper if they reject it. That's for you to figure out, and the open forums might give you some insight about that.
