The educational web site
http://www.cam.org/~aselby/lesson.html (appetizers for math and reason)
offers the following lessons and appetizers for math, critical thinking,
and learning in general. The math appetizers go from arithmetic to
calculus. The appetizers for logic or reason are mainly math-free.
1. A Road Safety Message.
2. Three Skills to introduce an algebraic way of writing and thinking.
3. Arithmetic and algebra review problems with answers.
4. Two logic puzzles to show the difference between one- and two-way
implications, and to help develop precise reading skills.
5. A discussion of suggestive or misleading questions.
6. Advice, approximately correct, for students 14+ (How to read, How
to learn, why go to school, how to study math and why.)
7. Opinions on the Communication of Skills or what to expect in the
Classroom.
8. Chains of Reason: How to use implication rules one at a time, or one
after another.
9. Longer Chains of Reason: A story to explain the basic ideas underlying
the concept of mathematical inducation.
10. Painless Theorem Proving. What is the difference between the solution of
a problem and the proof of a theorem (or mathematical assertion).
11. How does logic or rule-base reason appear?
12. A Pitch for the VNR Concise Encyclopadia of Mathematics.
13. What are Complex Numbers?
14. Why Slopes: A simple preview or review of calculus plus a discussion of
continuity, limits and error control in computations, and a few words
on math education.
15. How the notions of an implication rule being obeyed, disobeyed, or not
disobeyed can be used to explain the entries in truth tables for
if A then B. (A technical topic).
These appetizers and lessons are taken from books on the explanation
and comprehension of math and reason in daily life, science and
mathematics. The logic appetizers by themselves appear on the
web page http://www.cam.org/~aselby/logic_lessons. Most of these
logic appetizers are math free.
