A friend of mine forwarded to me the message about homebrew STMs and whether
anyone else actually built one.

I built the one that the ECE Department here at Carnegie Mellon has -
haven't worked on it in 3 years, so I don't know what the status on it is
these days.  I got atomic reslution of graphite with the instruments - I
believe that they are now working on using it to do doping profiles of p-n
junctions.  

I know that a bunch of people at Stanford built themselves STMs as well
(this was around 1988).  I could give names and more details if anyone's
interested.
