Fred Hapgood has a book out re the joys of engineering called _Up The Infinite Corridor_. In the chapter on nanotechnology he mentions a micromachine with a molecular thread bridging a *very* small gap which would be useful as an olfactory sensor. Could be used to detect drugs and explosives. I haven't read the whole book but I think it looks like a cross between _The Great Mambo Chicken and the Transhuman Condition_ (by the other Ed) and _The Existential Pleasures of Engineering_. Fred Hapgood has written on nanotechnology for _Omni_. SunCat kamchar@ibm.cl.msu.edu
