There was an article in Computers in Physics within the last couple of years
with directions on building some flavour of scanned probe microscope.  The
article was aimed at high school physics teachers and I seem to recall a price
tag of less than a couple of thousand dollars.
The directions did assume that a PC was on hand to control the device.
