I am seeking information on commercially
available software packages that serve the
wholesale distribution industry. I have
seen references to various packages with
monikers such as Distribution Resource
Planning (DRP) Systems, Logisitics,
"Supply Chain", etc.
Our current system is UNIX-based and has
unfortunately been orphaned by the original
software developers. In consideration of
its primitive and proprietary architecture
dating back fifteen (15) years, it is
painfully apparent that we have no practical
alternative but to replace the entire system.
We are looking for a complete system that
not only addresses distribution-specific
functions, but offers full accounting
support as well (OE, AP, AR, IC, GL, etc.).
We would prefer a system that has been or
is currently being ported to Microsoft
Windows NT Server.
Furthermore, we require that it be based
on a leading database management system
such as Microsoft SQL Server, Informix,
Oracle, etc.
Since my background is strongly rooted in
the computer integrated manufacturing and
engineering automation marketplace, I would
greatly appreciate references and/or trade
journals that address the software marketplace
for distribution industries.
I would like to find something comparable
to Managing Automation (Thomas Publishing
Company). Managing Automation does a good
job of providing information in the computer
integrated manufacturing (CIM) marketplace
with articles on (MRP, CIM, CAD, CAM, CAE,
PLCs, etc.). I need something like this
for distribution industries.
Thank you in advance,
pdp

Phil, I do not know the size of your organization, however, there are several software packages which may integrate very well in the environment you have discussed. SAP, (yes it is a software company) specializes in all of the areas you specified. They are the only vendor I know which offers a completely integrated and universal solution. Therefore they are also expensive. Their home page is www.SAP.com. Another company which may meet your needs is PeopleSoft. Their array of products is not as robust, but they have a fair foundation from which to work. Run away from Oracle financials. They promise the world, but leave you to deliver. Also for the Inventory management pieces I would look towards the ID systems journal. It provides many technological solutions for what you seem to be needing. Hope this gave you a direction to go. JD :-)

I am wondering how certain titles of newsgroups get created. It seems that some of the adult groups have some pretty rank names. Is there any regulations or rules you have to follow when you create a news site? I am looking to create a few news sites about sports and business. Does anyone know how to go about doing so? Thanks, Dave -- _________________________________________________________________ Long Term, Risk Free Residual Income. No Investment, No Risk! He has published several books on this and related topics. I resently found his web page. I don't recall the actual address but you can probable find it via the search engines. E- mail me if your have questions. His web page references about 10 s/w packages which are strong in Distribtuion needs. They run on mainframes, mini's and PC lans. Jeff Cozens

I don't know the answer to your question. However, if I had the same
question myself I would start by looking for FAQ's on the topic. For
those in turn I'd look in newsgroups like *.announce.* and *.new.*.
These I'd locate by searching all newsgroup names for matching
substrings.
