CSIRO DIVISION OF BUILDING, CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING Highett, Victoria The CSIRO Division of Building, Construction and Engineering has extensive fluid dynamic research facilities at its Highett Laboratories. During the past decade the research of the Advanced Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (AFDL) at the Division has become more industrially focussed. This trend has increased the need for fundamental research to underpin industrial research. Three positions are required to undertake fundamental fluid dynamics research related to the mixing of fluids. The understanding of fluid mixing will be enhanced by relating strain, vorticity and turbulence parameters to mixing distribution and rate. Experimental Fluid Dynamicist $42K-$57K + Superannuation Position BCE94/12 The Advanced Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (AFDL) is undertaking strategic research in the area of stirred vessel mixing. We wish to appoint a scientist to work in the area of experimental fluid dynamics applied to mixing in flows of different rheologies. Your work will be to undertake sophisticated flow measurements by applying advanced flow measuring techniques to gain an understanding of mixing in terms of vorticity, critical point theory, shear strain etc. These data will also be used for validating softw are. Initially, your task will be to investigate the coupling between the circumferential instabilities in the swirling flows generated by axial impellers with sloshing instabilities of the bulk flow in a mixing vessel. You will have a PhD in Engineering or equivalent qualification. You will have extensive experience in experimental fluid dynamics, in both Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows, and in the study of particle transport using optical flow measuring techniques. Experience in solid/liquid flow measureme nt using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques would be a distinct advantage. You will be required to work in a team environment and possess highly developed communication skills. More information: You are invited to telephone Martin Welsh on (03)252 6000, fax (03) 2526240 or via electronic mail (mcw@mel.dbce.csiro.au) for further information. Australia's prefix is 61, so an overseas call to Martin Welsh would be 61 3 252 6000. A copy of the duty statement and selection criteria can be obtained by telephoning Helen Smith on (03) 252 6000 or fax on (03) 252 6244. Computational Fluid Dynamicist $42K-$57K + Superannuation Position BCE94/13 The Division is undertaking strategic research in the area of stirred vessel mixing. You will have a PhD in Mathematics or equivalent qualification. You will have postdoctoral experience in developing and applying spectral/finite element codes to non-Newtonian fluid flows and the study of particle transport. You will be required to work in a team environment and possess highly developed communication skills. More information: You are invited to telephone Dr. Kerry Hourigan on (03)252 6000, fax (03) 2526240 or via electronic mail (kh@mel.dbce.csiro.au) for further information. A copy of the duty statement and selection criteria can be obtained by telephoning Helen Smith on (03) 252 6000 or fax on (03) 252 6244. Post Doctoral Fellowship Experimental Fluid Dynamicist $37K-$47K + Superannuation Position BCE94/14 The position involves experimental research on the dynamics of fluids mixing in stirred vessels and in jets. It will involve measurement of mixing and flow patterns in liquids, liquids with suspended particles and with aeration. Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluids will be studied. The results will be related to computational and theoretical models. Strategies will be developed for improving mixing and efficiency in stirred vessels. A PhD in engineering or equivalent is required. Experience in experimental fluid mechanics, particularly advanced techniques of fluid flow velocimetry such as Laser Doppler, Hot-wire and Particle Image Velocimetry, is essential. Candidates should have no more than 3 years relevant experience since confirmation of the degree. The successful candidate will be required to work in a team environment and should possess highly developed communication skills. The appointment is for a period of three years. More information: You are invited to telephone Ian Shepherd on (03)252 6000, fax (03)252 6240 or via electronic mail (ics@mel.dbce.csiro.au) for more information. A copy of the detailed duty statement and selection criteria can be obtained from Ms Helen Smith via telephone (03) 252 6000 or fax (03) 252 6244. Applications should be framed against the selection criteria for one of the above positions and should state relevant personal particulars including details of qualifications and experience.
