It can create two 3D drawings of the crystal structure and then flip between them to illustrate the movement of atoms in a structural transition. This vibrating 3D drawing can then be rotated and zoomed on the computer screen. Xtal-3d will run on many different computers, and there is even a WWW version on http://www.ill.fr/dif, BUT the dynamic flipping between structures only works at present on Silicon Graphics (SGI) machines. With a little knowledge of VRML :-) you should eventually be able to make it work on a PC if you were to construct two (or more) VRML drawings (eg using the WWW version), and then edit the resulting ASCII files to use the dynamic VRML-1 extensions in Netscape's live3D for Windows. (You could also write a dynamic file in VRML-2, with somewhat more effort :-) I haven't tried this on a PC, but could help if you have an SGI machine.
