The last I saw it. it was sulfur vapor in a electrodeless glass envelope, 
the whole construct in a Faraday cage to increase efficiency (avoid 
frying bystanders).

My opinion is that efficiency is not the whole ticket.  One must also 
include the price of admission.  Replacing your incandescents with 
fluorescents is undeniably more economical, but only after you pay for 
the infrastructure.  (The payback time is extended by interest lost on 
the money you spent.)

The lamp may be cheap and wonderful, but don't forget about buying its 
socket.
