Friends set up a sort of community based on her principles, and I get the occasional invitation to visit them, once to write an article about them. Supposedly based on Objectivism, laissez-faire capitalism, and tolerance for the full flowering of the individual, it is the most rule-driven, hierarchical and unnecessarily structured system of social togetherness I have ever seen in my whole life - with rules for everything! The great C. Wright-Mills would not have been shocked, though fascinated by many factors he predicated of quasi-prescriptive and non- organic social orders. For example, you need an invitation from the whole community to the communal dinner, which wasn't at all bad: quite lively, in fact, with lots of predictable chatter. The most extraordinary thing was when I approached my old friend PU, who was tending some gardens. A founding member, he had invited me. 'How would you describe your role here, PU?' 'John, we sent you the booklet: that explains everything! Otherwise talk to Peter and Jane, who, over dinner, told me almost nothing at all!' Questions: 'Why do you all have security doors?' 'Who owns what around here?' 'What do you do if someone dies?' 'How do you decide who gets in?' 'How much per head do you put in together?' And so forth: perhaps 30 more questions. Judith: 'I made this pie: would you like to try it?' I doubt very much whether you or I would have been happy there! -- 'foolsrushin.'
