In fact, you'll need two somethings, aimed at the moon and hitting it at exactly the right times. The concept of a "free-travel transit orbit" is well known to NASA -- such are routinely done in order to get to other planets. The general idea is to have an ellipse with perihelion at Earth and aphelion at the target planet, if it's an outer planet; aphelion is at Earth and perihelion at one's destination if one is going to Venus or Mercury. At the other end of the eclipse, the second burn ensues, circularizing the orbit. Since we don't have a rocket engine quite big enough to do the job (the Moon is after all 73.5 quintillion metric tonnes), we direct two little somethings from the Oort cloud and hope for the best. At least, such is my understanding of your proposal. -- #191, ewill3@earthlink.net Linux. Because life's too short for a buggy OS. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com
