If you have a system where there is an equilibrium between the ingoing and outgoing rate of substance or energy, then you have a 'steady-state'; if you mix two solutions in a beaker, but then add nothing or take nothing from it and just wait till the system stops changing, then you have a 'thermodynamic equlibrium'. (I know, this is a very simplified explanartion.) A charachteristic of life is its ability to sustain a 'steady-state'.
