I have to say that in my time designing semiconductor circuits, the best I could say was that I probably understood them better than anyone else I came across, but I really only understood enough to know where the glaring gaps in my knowledge were. The real experts..and there are probably only a few hundred worldwide - worked for the chip manufacturers. Its a slightly startling thought. That there are less than a thousand people in the globe with enough expertise to really design semiconductors from the ground up. As opposed to designing chips., or circuits using chips.
