You did not say, Is this funded from an NRSA fellowship?

I too was on such a fellowship and there was a repayment clause if I left 
Science to work outside ivory tower (you could still work in industry).  I 
was recently told that NRSA has dropped that clause from the fellowships, 
basically because it was not enforced.

THe advise on checking with a lawyer is probably sound.
