POST-DOC OPPORTUNITIES
++++++++++++++++++++++
The SAFIR Group of INRIA and the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis
is offering two postdoctoral positions in Automatic Differentiation
in 1997.
Automatic Differentiation is a program transformation technique.
From a code that computes a function, an Automatic Differentiation Tool
generates a new code which computes the derivatives of the function.
Work in this area involves methods from compiler construction,
computer algebra, and scientific computing.
These positions offer excellent working conditions and the opportunity
to specialize in Automatic Differentiation. The SAFIR Group performs
research in this area and continues to use and develop its own
Automatic Differentiation Tool, Odyssee.
Details of the positions are as follows:
PD9705. Hybrid Forward/Reverse Automatic Differentiation
========================================================
The aim of this work is to define how the two modes of
differentiation (forward and reverse) can be best combined
for industrial codes.
The first task is to study how this hybrid computation
can be performed and to implement an interface between
codes that have been generated with the two modes.
The second task is to determine how a software system can
automatically choose between these two modes on a function-
by-function basis so as to generate a more efficient code.
This position is related to an industrial contract.
PD9706. Semantic Information for Automatic Differentiation
==========================================================
This project aims at using analytic derivatives computed by
Odyssee in existing Computer Aided Process Engineering.
The goal of this post-doctoral work is to define and realize
a syntax for expressing semantic information in source programs
to allow the generation of more efficient derivatives.
This language will be an extension of some directives for
parallelization or vectorization. Implementation will involve
syntactic analysis and modification of the differentiation tool
to take into account the specified semantic information.
This position is related to the European Project AD-CAPE.
In each case, the candidate should hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics
or Computer Science. Previous experience in Automatic Differentiation,
compiler construction, and programming in Caml or SML would be ideal.
Please send a letter of interest with your CV before the 15th of January to
