Well, you could just become a movie star, then anything is possible...
hehehehe.....
No seriously, there have been a few responses of specific expiditions
or organizations, but I've asked myself the same question for a number of
years now and have found a casual answer...
Join your local Natural History Museum. They generally sponsor acheological
digs, biological surveys (go out and count species) and other interesting
things from rocks to salamander studies. Get to know the curators and if
you have skills they are interested in, you can often volunteer to go on
digs or field studies. If you don't have the skills, you may be recommended
to take a "field course" which is basically the same as a volunteer, except
they ask you to pay.
Most field scientists that I know tell me they spend less than 10% of
their time in the field and the rest in the lab analyzing data. Joining
the museum would allow you to spend just as much time in the field, if it's
a very active museum in an urban center of the US. It also allows you to
go on different types of field work and ...who knows...maybe you'll find
an area of research you would rather do than your own.
have fun
diane h peapus... who just got back from taking some pH samples
