I assume that you are interviewing for a position in a microbiology laboratory. The LAL test (Limulus amino lysate (sp?)) is a test for pyrogens in products which has for the most part replaced the old rabbit with thermocouple test (probably cheaper and a whole lot less wear-and-tear on the rabbits, especially since those failing the test may have gone home as someone's dinner). The test uses a constituent from the blood of the horseshow crab. The initial commercial development was at Mallinckrodt by Don Mills who worked at a bench behind mine at the time. The assay is based on the congealing of the LAL with the product being tested. (Obviously, I am a chemist, not a microbiologist). Sugggest you look at any number of lab supply catalogs and give them a call for tear sheets, etc on the test. The initial tests were very tricky and operator dependent and I don't know whether that has changed. Good luck on the interview.
