Project title: The Modulatory Calcineurin-Interacting Proteins (MCIPs)
in Cardiac Dvelopment and Disease

Key words: molecular biology, cardiac development, cell signaling,
calcineurin, transcription, Down syndrome, Alzheimer's, hypertrophy
and heart failure.

Two fully funded post-doctoral positions are immediately available to
study a new family of regulatory cell-signaling proteins that are
important in cardiac development and disease. The MCIP proteins are
part of a fundamental signaling network that is conserved from yeast
to mammals. They modulate calcium-activated signaling through the
protein phosphatase calcineurin and thus are critical in any
excitatory cell, such as muscle or neurons, where extreme calcium
fluctuations occur. We have shown that MCIPs play a profound
cardioprotective role and we believe that they may be involved in a
range of age-related degenerative disorders including Alzheimer's, ALS
and Down Syndrome. (JBC 2000,275:8719-25 / PNAS 2001,98:3328-33/
Trends in Cardiovascular Med.2003,13:15-21.) UT Southwestern is a
dynamic and collaborative institution dedicated to biomedical research
and education.

Basic qualification: Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent

Desirable qualifications: The ideal candidate should have experience
in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell signaling and/or molecular
cardiology.
