The Right Wing minority government told the Department of Fisheries
and Oceans to increase the seal cull quota by 50,000 this year, as
some wort of "message" to European countries banning seal product
imports.

Despite that Tory encouragement the hunt is simply not happening.

With the mildest winter on record in Canadian weather record books
there is no sea ice to speak of in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The hunts from Prince Edward Island and the Madeleine Isles are
simply not happening. There is no ice to walk around on, and no
pups kill. They are drowned or starving if they manages to wash
up on shore still breathing.

At this time of year sea ice usually extends from the western Gulf
out past Newfoundland.

Darn, you try and send a message to those pesky Europeans, and
climate change shows that science has little or nothing to
do with the seal cull quotas, and makes a joke of your
attempt to score a PR point with dead seals.

At least Greenpeace has stopped their own role in the annual
slaughter. They used to go out and spray oil paint onto pups,
supposedly to "save" them. It made good TV footage, but DFO
biologists who tracked what happened to the oil painted pups
found they died of hypothermia.

It really isn't any different from a sea bird dying of
hypothermia after getting an oil spot the size of quarter on
its feathers.

Greenpeace was simply adding it's own, unauthorized, count of
dead seal pups to the authorized quota killed by hunters.

Obviously all those excess warm seals have melted the ice floes.
