It appears we have Canadians arguing amongst themselves about
whether or not we should spend the time and money to explore and
develop space. What else is new?
Think of it this way: most people remember the late 1400s as the
first time explorers began to open up the present-day Americas.
The social policies, etc. are less remembered. In two-hundred
years, if our descendents are kicking around, they'll probably
remember the 20th century as the century in which nuclear power
was first harnessed, electronic computers were first used, and
humans first ventured into space.
Space exploration and development at a modest scale will have little
or no impact on our national debt and our decaying social structure.
If anything, it would probably help improve Canada's situation.
The only argument people need to go to space is the same one
used for any explorer / adventurer: Because it's there.
If you think otherwise, you may as well pack everything up and
go home.
People have a simple choice: move forward, or backward.
I'd rather move forward.
