Could the V2 win the X-prize?
AIUI, the payload bay is (barely) large enough for three good friends.

You'd need to:
Make the engine restartable.
Add a ballute/chute to keep it upright on descent.
Add landing gear.
Upgrade the exhaust diverters.
Add ullage motors.

Takeoff and burn until on course for 100Km, shutoff engine.
Go ballistic until at 20 (?) Km.
Fire ullage motors, restart main engine, fly a couple of descending circles
ending up pointed upwards with a downwards velocity of a few dozen meters
a second.
Turn off main engine.

Pop the ballute, wait till at 5Km, blip the engines, pop the main chute.

At landing, blip the motor at just the right time to kill nearly all
vertical speed.

Crosswinds would be bad.
