We were sitting around after dinner when the subject of possible damage to the shuttle's gantry came up. How much damage does it sustain under the rather potent exhaust stream during liftoff? What exactly is it made from? Is it a simple steel structure or is it made from a special alloy? How often are sensitive items such as hoses and cables replaced? Thanks, Mark and Laila
