What kind of alternative energy source (other than fossil fuels) is
available in Egypt?

The answer is very important to me, therefore, if you have the
answer, email me at

600 foot giant bobbing birds. Their fuzzy heads dip into Lake Nasser.
Their tails are attached to cables which pull torque on cams on the
axles of generators.

It is interesting to note that each cow in the world
produces ( and passes ) 500 liters of gas every day.

Although many cultures use cow ( And Horse ) droppings for fuel,
none have taken the big step, and hooked up a cow to a gas stove.

Some cultures are starting to produce gas from chicken droppings.

Now if someone can harness the B.S. in sci.physics,
it would solve the world's energy problem.

SOLAR!

Now what did I win?

(Nuclear was my first guess, but I forgot when the Soviets would have
shipped arms to non-aligned nations, so they may have exceeded their
useful half-life.)

Dear Kitana,
In addition to hydro & solar already suggested, I'll bet there are
useful areas for wind-generated power.

s'obvious.

Use (wait for it) pyramid power. It produces lots of Horus power.

I take it we have all discounted hydro power, is the Nile all used up?

Not only is it quite used up, but the usage probably generated more
damage then good. A significant part of the power output of the Aswan
Dam is dedicated to the production of fertilizers which were not
needed at all before the dam was build (the annual flooding of the
Nile Delta maintained it fertile indefinitely).

I knew there were smaller ones, using the water they pump uphill as their
water source, but 600' tall ones? Really? I gotta see that.

Not only has the reduced flow of the Nile reduced the fertilisation
effects of the flooding, but it has also radically changed the sediment
flow and deposition in both the Nile and the Delta. The Delta is now
suffering channel silting and erosion which had hitherto *never* been a
problem.

Although I've seen no published paperwork, there are claims amongst the
scientific community in Egypt that the 'slower' flow of the Nile may also
account for increased numbers of problematic water life, such as the water
hyacynth and a number of invertibrate parasites.

Before the High Dam, the Nile was 'regulated' by a number of smaller
barrages along its length, each with some hydro potential along with their
primary task of regulating flow and flow into irrigation channels. They
appear to be maintaining the irrigation flow but I'm not so sure that the
remianing flow offers much for hydro generation.

Don't forget the special bonus which came with Aswan - a massive
and perpetual shistosomiasis epidemic as the stagnant waters exploded
disease transmission throughout the Nile Delta. Egypt has always had the
worm. Now, it is celebrating big time.

I rememeber reading about a proposed scheme to run seawater into a
large depression in Egypt which is well below sea level. Hydroelectric
power could thus be produced.
