Systems Engineering Process Definition & Improvement Workshop
presented by
SECAT (Systems Engineering Capability Assessment & Training)
Workshop Objectives:
* Learn an industry accepted list of good system engineering characteristics
* Understand how to use the SE-CMM to develop SE processes or evaluate
existing
SE processes
* Learn criteria for measuring the capability of SE processes
* Understand how an implemented SE process changes with increased capability
levels
* Receive a checklist for developing & improving your SE processes
SECAT assists organizations improve the quality of their systems
engineering processes by teaching understanding and the use of the Systems
Engineering Capability Maturity Model (SE-CMM), developed by the Industrial
Collaboration. As principle authors and developers of the SE-CMM, SECAT
staff are uniquely qualified to teach, and help organizations implement,
the SE-CMM.
The SE-CMM was written with the goal of providing organizations with an
industry accepted list of what comprises good systems engineering and a
specific roadmap for improving systems engineering processes. The model is
applicable to any organization regardless of size, customer or technology
base. The SE-CMM was developed by organizations with an established
history of systems engineering expertise and utilizes International
Standards Organization (ISO) capability levels.
Capability Maturity Models are powerful tools that have been helping
organizations get significant returns on their process improvement efforts
for years. Published data reports an average $5.00 return for every dollar
invested in CMM for Software based process improvement.
In this workshop, participants will learn general information about the
SE-CMM model and the architecture; specific information about the process
areas which describe the characteristics of good systems engineering; and
specific information about the capability levels and using the levels to
create roadmaps for process improvement. The workshop will also discuss
SE-CMM assessments and their value in providing a meaningful metric to
track process improvement efforts and in pinpointing weaknesses in
processes.
Who Should Attend:
Systems engineers and managers involved in all phases of SE activities;
people involved in defining, improving, or assessing SE processes.

Ms. >Cusick holds How is it that someone can have SE-CMM assessment "experience" when the SE-CMM is still in the development stages? Either I am out of touch/date, or something else is going on. Since I have been part of the review group of the SE-CMM, and I have not seen it "published" for use, I find it interesting that someone can be "teaching" it, and have "credible" people with experience using it. gerry

You are partially correct in that SE-CMM project has continued this year with the objective of improving the model, however Version 1.0 of the SE-CMM was published 12/94. Version 1.1 will be published soon. The SE-CMM and the SE-CMM Appraisal Method are available to the public and have been for some time. The SEI maintains an ftp site where the model can be downloaded. Alternatively, one can order a hard copy of the model from a number of distribution sites. A number of very credible organizations have used the model to perform appraisals, and been delighted with the results (well, maybe not delighted with their scores but believed that the assessment correctly summarized and help prioritize their problems). Eight companies have performed appraisals with members of the Industrial Collaboration participating, with more companies deploying the SE-CMM internally. At the recent INCOSE conference, the SE-CMM workshop (taught by myself and Roger Bate) was attended by approximately 60 people. Companies such as Harris, Loral, TRW, Motorola, Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, Raytheon, ITT Automotive, Canadian Marconi, Thompson CSF, and Siemens sent representatives to understand what the SE-CMM is and how they can use it. SECAT is formed entirely of current or ex SE-CMM authors. Between the 5 of us we have approximately 100 years of systems engineering experience and management. In addition we were all immersed in the SE-CMM during the entire development period. If you want more information on the status of the SE-CMM and SECAT's offerings, please feel free to contact me. -- Kerinia Cusick secat@csz.com http://www.csz.com/secat SECAT (Systems Engineering Capability Assessment and Training)
