We are trying to trace the fate of paper pulp in seawater, and need a method of identifying the fibers. I am looking for information on how to indelibly dye or stain paper and cardboard. The paper and cardboard will be shredded in a paper pulper. We need to be able to indelibly stain all of the paper particles that are produced by the pulper. This stain must be indelible to seawater. After exposing the paper particles to seawater, we would like to remove the stain via a solvent and measure the quantity of stain extracted spectroscopically (such as fluorescence). I would also be interested in any other technique which might enable us to identify/quantify the fiber concentration in seawater. Thanks, Art Croucher art.croucher@jhuapl.edu
