ESUM98 - EUROPEAN SMART USERS MEETING 1998 - ESUM98 First Announcement Call for Pre-Registration and Oral Presentations A BRUKER/AXS SMART users meeting will be held in Bergen, Norway, September 11-13, 1998. OBJECTIVE: To strengthen, deepen and propagate the accumulated, but dispersed, knowledge and experience of the use of SMART-CCD-systems. To explore new scientific possibilities and applications. Accordingly, active parttaking from the participants will be given high priority as will ad hoc discussions. Key topics related to the use of SMART systems will be addressed. Examples of topics without order of precedence: Data collection strategies Macromolecular crystallography Synchrotron applications High accuracy measurements - Charge density studies Twinned crystals Diffuse scattering studies Optimising integration & data reduction procedures None single crystal applications such as powders and others Technical and software issues/problems Bruker/AXS representatives will of course be present, including Chuck Campana from Madison. Also, George Sheldrick, Alan Pinkerton, ke Kvick, among several other scientists representing particular fields of interest, will be presenting talks. DATE: In order to facilitate attendance and minimise travel costs, the meeting will take place on the weekend of September 11-13th 1998. We expect participants to arrive noontime on Friday 11th. The meeting will open on Friday afternoon and close on Sunday afternoon. WE INVITE: - All users of SMART systems in Europe. - SMART users from other parts of the world are of course welcome too! - Potential buyers of CCD-based diffractometers. PRE-REGISTRATION: IMPORTANT! In order to quickly establish the approximate number of participants, we PLEAD you to pre-register AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. The number of participants WILL be limited. Comments on field(s) of interest is encouraged. General suggestions are also welcomed. Email your pre-registration to karl.tornroos@kj.uib.no or send a telefax to the number indicated at the end of this document. INVITATION TO GIVE ORAL PRESENTATION: We encourage participants to contribute with an oral presentation (15-45 minutes) pertinent to the use of SMART instrumentation or connected topics. If you would like to give a presentation, please indicate this. If possible, give tentative title and/or area of interest (e.g. "macromolecular structure determination"). We will try to push the deadline of final talk-titles as close to the meeting as possible. No specific postersession is planned. However, posters may be presented. If you would like to do so - inform us. WEB-PAGE: A Web-page containing further information on this meeting will be set up. News on this will follow later. COST: Not known at present. Nevertheless, we will do all we can to keep this at a minimum. Information will follow later on the Web page. TRAVELLING TO BERGEN: Bergen airport has international direct connections to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Helsinki, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Stockholm. Domestic flights are abundant, e.g. Oslo is served hourly. The train ride from Oslo is particularly scenic (7 h). Direct car-ferry links to Bergen are available from Denmark (Hanstholm 16.5 h.) and from the U.K. (Newcastle 22 h). Bergen is also the starting point of the famous cruise "Hurtigruten" along the Norwegian coast ending in the (very) northern town of Kirkenes, for those that contemplate adding some vacation to their stay. So, be SMART, be there! On behalf of the organisers, Karl Wilhelm Trnroos ********************************************************************* Karl W.
