IUCr Journals

Editorial Assistant

The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) publishes Acta
Crystallographica, Journal of Applied Crystallography and Journal of
Synchrotron Radiation, and has been at the forefront of new developments in
data handling and electronic publication.

Applications are invited for the post of Editorial Assistant to work on the
production of these journals and at times on other publications of the
Union. The Editorial Office is at 5 Abbey Square, Chester, UK.

The International Union of Crystallography, founded in 1948, is an
international organization for the promotion of the science of
crystallography. Its members are 40 countries adhering through National
Adhering Bodies; the UK adheres through The Royal Society, the USA and
Russia through their National Academies of Science, etc. The Union is
incorporated in Switzerland and has its legal domicile in Geneva. The
overall policies of the Union are determined by triennial General Assemblies
and its regular working is governed by an Executive Committee, which has
responsibility for all the financial affairs of the Union.

The normal running of the Union is undertaken at the Union office in
Chester, under the authority of the General Secretary and Treasurer on
behalf of the Executive Committee. The office has two sub-divisions, the
Executive Office and the Editorial Office, headed by the Executive Secretary
and the Managing Editor, respectively.

The IUCr produces six important journals in the fields of crystallography
and structural science, namely

   * Acta Crystallographica A - Foundations of Crystallography (bimonthly),
   * Acta Crystallographica B - Structural Science (bimonthly),
   * Acta Crystallographica C - Crystal Structure Communications (monthly),
   * Acta Crystallographica D - Biological Crystallography (bimonthly),
   * Journal of Applied Crystallography (bimonthly) and
   * Journal of Synchrotron Radiation (bimonthly).

Acta Crystallographica was first published in 1948. It currently contains
about 6000 pages per annum and is distributed to over 60 countries. The
Journal of Applied Crystallography, which first appeared in 1968, is now
running at over 900 pages per annum. The Journal of Synchrotron Radiation
was launched in 1994 and has approximately 400 pages per annum. All of the
journals are printed in England.

Papers are submitted electronically and also in hard-copy format. Their
scientific content is controlled by (honorary) Editors and Co-editors
located throughout the world. These Editors and Co-editors constitute the
Union's Commission on Journals. After a paper has passed the refereeing
process, it is prepared for publication by the staff at the Editorial
Office.

Eighteen staff work in the Editorial Office. Twelve graduates work on
editing and data checking of papers and are supported by a Research and
Development Department, which has four graduate staff. There are also two
Secretaries. The Editorial Assistant will be required to work on the
journals, including the electronic and conventional editing of scientific
manuscripts, proof-reading and indexing. Full training will be given.

The office is highly computerised with over 70% of the pages typeset
in-house from electronically supplied papers. The journal-housekeeping,
index-preparation and numerical-checking procedures are also run routinely
on the office network of Sun workstations, PCs and Macs.

Applicants should possess a chemistry or physics degree and have an eye for
detail. It is essential that they should have a fluent command of the
English language and a sense of style in written English. Knowledge of at
least one of the three other languages in which articles are accepted
(namely French, German and Russian) and previous editorial or computing
experience would be an advantage. Applicants with knowledge of TeX, HTML or
SGML, and familiarity with the rules of chemical nomenclature will be
particularly well positioned. The initial annual salary will depend on
qualifications and experience but will be in the range 14015 to 18989 pounds
sterling. The normal hours of duty are 36.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday).
In addition to the eight normal public holidays, the leave entitlement
is 23 working days per annum.

Send a full CV, with names and addresses of two referees, to
