Greetings!
We are currently have severe icing problems with the MSC low temperature
device. We have sent the transfer tube back before and they repaired a
weld and added a diffuser to the warm stream. It seems that the ice is
now forming internally and falling down on the crystal during the course
of the run. Usually within 24 hours, enough ice has fallen down and
adhered to the crystal, that ice rings have formed on our images. We
have sealed every place which is likely to leak with silicon epoxy, and
we have also put sealing tape on all threaded joints - all to no avail.
We have sent the unit back and now they propose to replace the nozzle and
make additional changes.
We are going to take the pessamistic view and assume that the trouble
will remain after we get the unit back. For those of you who have this
instrument and have solved similar problems, HELP! :-)
Any suggestions on how to eliminate/minimize this problem will be greatly
appreciated. Additionally, if you have any experience with the Oxford
Cryostream or the new X-stream from MSC, we would appreciate hearing from
you, especially if you are experiencing NO icing problems. Replacing the
MSC unit with one of these systems (or any other) is an option.
Thanks for any info/help!
Kevin
