                       Postdoctoral Positions
                       ----------------------

We have good reasons to anticipate that we will be funded by the EU for
three postdoctoral positions, each of 2 years duration, for the development
of methods for the solution and refinement of crystal structures in the 100
to 1000 atom range, and the application of these methods to high resolution
data from small proteins and to natural product molecules of biological
importance. In this project we hope to bridge the gap between 'small molecule'
and 'macromolecular' approaches to crystal structure determination; for a
variety of reasons, structures in this intermediate range are frequently more
difficult to determine than (for example) small proteins. This region also
includes molecules of critical biological importance, where the gaps in our
structural knowledge are most serious.

All applicants should have a good understanding of crystallographic
fundamentals; we anticipate that at least two of the successful candidates
will have experience in the purification and crystallization of
macromolecules. We can provide an active and harmonious research group and
state of the art facilities for computing and x-ray data collection,
including extensive cryocrystallographic facilities, several diffractometers,
rotating anode, and multiwire and CCD area detectors. Goettingen is an
idyllic university town, with many Kultural opportunities, about two hours
from both Frankfurt Airport and DESY by high speed train.

It is probable that the positions will be restricted to citizens of the
recently enlarged European Union, excluding the host country (Germany), but
possibly including Switzerland. The financial terms of such EU Fellowships
are usually rather generous, but the ability of the EU to generate
bureaucratic delays is legendary. Although the timetable is not yet known,
we expect that formal applications should be made by about the end of
September 1994 and that the commencing dates should not be before April 1st
and not after August 1st 1995.

Interested candidates should first contact me informally by email
(gsheldr@shelx.uni-ac.gwdg.de) or fax (+49-551-392582). All enquiries will
be treated as strictly confidential.
                                         George Sheldrick
