Thanks to the people who gave responses via both email
and followons.  

There seems to be a general agreement on the following :-

Indigo 2,
48-64 Meg RAM,
"extreme" graphics,
I Gig or larger hard-disk.

This was quoted as being around the US$15,000 to US$28,000 mark.  
As we have software on a separate budget, this looks OK.

However, a quote from Silicon Graphics in Australia follows :-

INDIGO2 Extreme Graphics, 150/75 MHz, 32MB Memory
1Gb System Disk, 19" Monitor

List Price       ~A$81,000     
Ex-Tax           ~A$65,000  
12 Month Support ~A$9,000 

INDIGO2 Extreme Graphics, 150/75 MHz, 64MB Memory
2Gb System Disk, 19" Monitor

List Price       ~A$90,000
Ex-Tax           ~A$72,000
12 Month Support ~A$9,000

I'm afraid we are PC based here and are used to 
near top of the range PCs for around the $5,000
with 2 to 5 year warranties.

US$15,000 - US$28,000 sounds a reasonable price for 
the graphical power we are buying.  However, A$60,000 
to A$90,000 does not seem reasonable.  

(A$1 =  US$0.75)
