EE380 Computer Systems Colloquim
Winter Qtr. 1992/93
Lecturer Number 4
Date: Wednesday, January 27, 1993
Time: 4:15 - 5:30pm
Place: Skilling Auditorium, Stanford University
Title: Virtual Reality
Speaker: Jaron Lanier, Domain Simulations, Inc.
Abstract:
Virtual Reality represents a design philosophy for computer systems in
which human physiology and cognition are the guiding principles. By
designing peripheral devices and interactive software that reproduce
the sensory-motor feedback loop that the human body is accustomed to
finding in the physical world, it is possible to simulate the
experience of alternate worlds. Virtual reality has created a new
market for computer systems, a new focus for advanced research, and
evokes fascinating philosophical and social investigations. This
presentation will discuss the components of a Virtual Reality system
and the history of the field, and will encourage discussion of the
aesthetic and epistimological frontiers of VR.
