Length: permanent position

Primary duty:

Join a team to design, implement, test, and demonstrate a
distributed, multi-user, multi-threaded, terrain visualization system
to browse the entire globe down to meter accuracy (where available)
and enable vast quantities of geo-referenced data to be embedded.
This work will be performed as part of SRI's Digital Earth project
(http://www.ai.sri.com/digital-earth/). The system will be built
upon our existing networked terrain visualization system,
  TerraVision (http://www.ai.sri.com/TerraVision), as well as
evolving 3-D standards for the Web.

Other Duties:

Work on other graphics applications as required. Write technical
reports/papers. Present work at appropriate forums.

  - Experience in distributed/dynamic database design and management.
  - Extensive experience with OpenGL, VRML97, C/C++, Java, Unix,
X/Motif, SGI, and multi-threaded programming are key.
  - Knowledge of evolving web standards, in particular XML is key.
  - Knowledge of X3D, XHTML, DOM, SVG, etc. is desirable.

Company Description:

The Artificial Intelligence Center (AIC) is an integral part of SRI
International, formerly known as the Stanford Research Institute.
As part of a research institute, it carries out comprehensive and
effective long-term programs. At the same time, the Center provides
the stimulation and creative exchange of ideas characteristic of an
academic setting by maintaining associations with universities and
other research groups and by providing opportunities for students
and visiting fellows from the United States and abroad to
  participate in ongoing projects.

The AIC is one of the world's major centers of research in
artificial intelligence. Founded in 1966, the AIC has been a pioneer
and a major contributor to the development of computer capabilities
for intelligent behavior in complex situations. Its objectives are
to understand the computational principles underlying intelligence
in man and machines and to develop methods for building
computer-based systems to solve problems, to communicate with
people, and to perceive and interact with the physical world.

The AIC Perception Program performs research in machine vision,
computer graphics, expert systems, and evidential reasoning. SRI
is a contractor for the BADD and MAGIC II projects, and was a
contractor on the earlier MAGIC I project. Through these efforts,
SRI has developed its skills in the area of visualization of massive
terrain databases that are distributed over gigabit-per-second
  wide-area ATM networks.
